Finding A Reputable Doctor

As with most medical procedures it’s important to do your homework to find a reputable doctor to minimize risks, ensure safety, and increase your chances for success. There are a number of things you need to look for before choosing a doctor to remove your tattoos such as experience, qualifications, proof of past work, and whether or not they rent or own the removal equipment.

Experience Is A Must!

There’s no way around it, your doctor must be experienced. When you're on your first consultation, be aware of the achievements and awards your potential doctor has earned. You want to also look for attendance of advanced courses. This will prove that your doctor is knowledgeable about the procedure. Also look for "look-alike" board-certifications. Only the American Society of Plastic Surgeons represents the highest degree of professional certification.

If your potential doctor doesn’t have these types of awards or certifications, then be sure that the doctor at least has experience removing different types of tattoos, even if the total number of tattoo removal procedures they’ve performed is low. There are no federal regulations or laws concerning tattoo removal for doctors so determining whether the doctor has specialized training is important.

Proof of Past Work

If your potential doctor has nothing to hide, then they will have previous work available in the form of a portfolio or such. Also, a doctor that has experience removing tattoos will be willing to provide proof of their successes. Many physicians take photos of the tattoos they remove. They should have “before” photos, “after” photos, as well as photos that show the procedure in its entirety. Looking at the photos will give you a good idea of the quality of their services. If they don’t have photos you should beware that they might have something to hide.

Does Your Doctor Rent or Own Equipment?

Since some doctors don’t perform laser tattoo removals very often they sometimes rent the equipment needed for the procedure. This isn’t necessarily bad, its just important to find a doctor that owns their own lasers and keeps them in their office. Those doctors will have the most experience with tattoo removals. Doctors that rent their equipment or only have it available during a certain number of days of the week won’t have the same level of experience as doctors who own their own lasers.

Referrals And Recommendations

To make sure you find a reputable dermatologist or cosmetic surgery center to ensure proper treatment and care, ask around. If possible, you should get a recommendation from your family physician for a dermatologist or skin surgery center that specializes in tattoo removal. This will help you narrow your choices.
