What's In Tattoo Ink?

No one can be certain what’s in tattoo ink. Manufacturers are not required to disclose the contents of each color. Some professionals mix their own inks, which makes them more likely to know exact components. Still, many predispersed pigments are as safe as or safer than pigments mixed by a tattooist. The oldest pigments came from using ground up minerals and carbon black. Today’s pigments include original minerals, modern industrial organic pigments, veggie and plastic based pigments. Still, inks are mixed with many different types of metals and metal salts. And it’s important to know that no tattoo ink has been regulated by the FDA.

Most tattoo inks are in fact not inks at all. They are composed of pigments that are stuck more than less inside a carrier solution such as alcohol. See, the carrier disinfects the pigment suspension, keeps it evenly mixed and provides ease while being applied.

Inks that include plastic based pigments are intensely colored. Glow in the dark and UV tattoo inks are extremely risky, some are radio active or toxic while some are deemed safe. No one knows exact components of this ink and its long term side effects since it’s still relatively new. Allergic reactions and phototoxic reactions could be side effects of specific tattoo ink.

Still the question remains, what’s in tattoo ink? Well if you're interested in making your own, try mixing vodka, glycerin, and propylene glycol followed by a pigmented powder for about an hour and 15 minutes. You can add sterile marble or glass beads to aid in mixing. Try it. Chances are if it fails the ink will break up and leave your body naturally through your immune system. Not that much of a dare devil? Then leave it to the pro’s, and I'm talking about the one’s who refuse to disclose information.
