Q Switched Ruby Laser

Since the 1960’s, this laser is the mother of the three. Generally meant for removing decorative or traumatic tattoo’s, the Q Switched Ruby Laser or QSRL works on a 694nm wavelength and emits a short pulse of intense red light that is absorbed by the melanin or tattoo ink in the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. In other words, the laser penetrates the skin at a depth of up to 1 mm and instantly whitens the tissue. The Ruby is designed to target the tattoo ink only, keeping scars at a minimum. The QSRL is also designed to work well with black, blue and green colors and poorly with lighter colors like red, orange and yellow.

Q Switched Ruby Lasers are delivered in a series of mirrors and have “hot spots” within the beam of light. Dermatologists have their concerns with this type of laser because it occurs at frequencies higher than 6 J/cm and has links to HIV and Hepatitis.

This laser is not recommended for darker skinned patients because this could result in permanent hypo pigmentation. This laser is also not recommended on tattoos that contain iron oxide, usually cosmetic tattoos such as eyeliner, eyebrows, lips and scars. The QSRL is the “breaking of the skin” and the pulse duration is between 15-40nsec. This isn’t painful during the treatment however it could be slightly uncomfortable in the healing process. It should take approximately 4 to 6 sessions or treatments to completely remove a tattoo. No anesthetics are necessary during the process.

Costs will vary based on the size, the type of ink used, the type of colors used, the age of the tattoo, and whether or not an amateur or a professional performed the tattoo. I would call around to a few places and check to see if the doctor charges a consultation fee. During that consultation you should ask about the other two types of Q Switched Lasers; Nd: YAG and Alexandrite. Make sure the Ruby is the correct laser used when removing your tattoo.
