Chemical Peels Overview

There are many different chemical peels you may choose from; alpha hydroxy acid peels, beta hydroxy acid peels, a jessner’s peel, retinoic peels, trichloroacetic acid peels (TCA peels are the most common) and phenol peels. Each one uses specific chemical combinations that reach different depths of your dermis (your skin).

Before your peel your doctor will give you a pre-conditioning cream to prepare your skin. This usually takes place in the dermatologist’s office. Once you’ve made it to the chair a chemical solution is applied to your skin which causes your skin to blister, eventually peeling off. This in return leaves new skin. This process is repeated over time, and sooner than later you’ll begin to see how the peels remove the layers of skin that have been tattooed. During the process you will feel a numbing sensation along with stinging and burning sensations. This lasts approximately 5 to 10 minutes so don’t worry, it will be over soon.

It usually depends on the type of chemical peel you're doctor will be performing to determine which acids are used. Lactic, Carbolic, Glycolic, Trichloroacetic, Salicylic and Alpha Hydroxy acids are what he/she has to choose from depending on your desired results. Speaking of results, after you’ve received a chemical peel you could experience scarring, infection, or lightening and/or darkening of the skin, and more importantly these changes could be temporary or permanent. It’s not recommended you choose this method of tattoo removal if you smoke. There's something about those cigarettes chemical peels don’t like.

It’s safe to receive these peels on your chest, hands, arms, legs, neck and face. And afterwards your skin will appear red and will continue to peel for up to a week. The process can be repeated then if necessary. Remember the deeper the peel, the longer the recovery.
