TCA Treatments

TCA stands for tri-chloro-acetic acid. It’s most commonly used during medium depth chemical peelings. This type of peeling may be done in house or at a surgery center. Before your treatment your doctor will go over basic guidelines you need to follow. He/she will probably give you a medicine known as acyclovir to prevent viral infections after the treatment has taken place.

The cool part about getting a TCA treatment is you may try a different chemical beforehand. If you are unable to achieve your desired results, TCA treatments may be performed shortly after. During the treatment you will experience pain. A burning sensation will continue for a short period of time afterwards too. But no worries, the pain eventually subsides. The chemicals are left on your tattoo for longer periods of time and the acid is stronger than a superficial peel acid. The procedure lasts approximately 45 minutes with little pain afterward.

There are a couple of risks you should be aware of before you receive this treatment. Redness will definitely occur for approximately 5 to 7 days, along with color tone changes. Crusting and scaling will be apart of your healing process and scarring, infections, swelling and allergic reactions are also possibilities. Results usually leave scars during the tattoo removal process since these steps usually have to be repeated again. Doctors recommend you wait at least 3 to 6 months after your first treatment before you choose to do it again. Your skin may turn a reddish brown in two to three days and it will probably become crusty and continue to peel over the course of a few days. Check with your doctor to make sure you are receiving the correct acid treatment before you make a decision.
